What is a floor mounted aircon?
A floor mounted aircon is the indoor half of a split system, built as a low, wide box at about knee height against the bottom of a wall. It draws room air in low, cools it over a coil and blows it out of the top, on some models from a lower vent too. Pipes, a drain and a cable link it to an outdoor condenser.
Even manufacturers mix the names: Mitsubishi Electric Australia's floor console product page says floor standing air conditioners are "also known as floor console air conditioners".
In photos, a console reaches roughly to the knee; a cabinet stands about as tall as an adult. If a listing shows the tall type, read the guide to tall floor-standing units.
Floor console, floor-standing cabinet or wall split: how do they compare?
The three types differ mainly in where the indoor unit sits and how far it throws air. A floor console sits low and suits a single room; a floor-standing cabinet stands tall and pushes air across a large open space; a wall-mounted split sits high and keeps the floor clear.
| Floor mounted (console) | Floor standing (cabinet) | Wall-mounted split | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Position | Foot of a wall, often under a window | Tall cabinet on the floor | High on the wall |
| Typical space | Bedroom, study, loft room | Shoplot, restaurant, hall | Bedroom, living room |
| Air throw | Upward, through one room | Strong stream across a long space | Downward and outward |
| Filter access | Hand height | Low on the cabinet | Ladder or step |
When is a low console the better choice than a wall unit?
A floor console suits a room where a wall-mounted unit cannot go high enough: a room under a sloping roof or a loft room, a room whose upper wall is mostly window, or a wall with beams or built-in cabinets near the ceiling. It also suits occupants who want the controls and filter within easy reach, such as older family members.
The trade-off: furniture cannot go in front of it, and its gentle upward airflow suits one room, not a long open hall.
What decides where a floor console can be installed?
Three routes decide the position: the refrigerant pipe run to the outdoor unit, the drain route for condensate, and an outdoor spot where hot air can escape and a technician can reach it. Aircon Hero quotes its own installation and relocation work only after inspecting the site, and the customer approves the quote before work starts.
Sitting near the floor, a console's drain has little height to fall. What an installation survey checks covers pipe limits, and how capacity is chosen for floor-standing units covers capacity.
Is a floor console easier to look after?
A floor console is easier to reach than a wall unit because its filter sits at hand height, with no ladder. Owners can rinse the filter between services: switch the unit off and unplug it, or switch off at the isolator, before opening any cover. The coil, blower, drain line and wiring stay with a technician.
Its intake sits close to the floor, so homes with carpets or pets should rinse the filter more often.
Pick by height, then book the right visit
Choose a console when the room cannot take a high wall unit, a cabinet for a shoplot or hall, and a wall split for an ordinary bedroom. Console owners can WhatsApp +60 18-355 5162 with a photo, brand and model, and Aircon Hero confirms whether it can take the job. See its general aircond service, aircon repair and residential aircond services; tall cabinets go to the floor-standing aircon service.
