What is a floor standing aircon?
A floor standing aircon is a split system with a tall indoor cabinet on the floor, usually against a wall or in a corner. Refrigerant pipes, a power cable and a drain hose run through the wall to an outdoor condenser. Once installed it stays put, which separates it from a portable aircond.
A portable unit is one box on castors that pushes hot air out through an exhaust hose. A floor-standing unit rejects heat outdoors, so compressor noise stays outside.
Daikin, for example, lists a Floor Standing Type among its SkyAir "Packaged Air Conditioners for Shops & Small Offices" on its SkyAir page.
Which spaces suit an air conditioner that stands on the floor?
A floor-standing unit suits open spaces where a wall-mounted unit cannot push air to the far end, or where no clear wall is high enough to mount one. Typical Klang Valley examples are shoplots, restaurants, surau and community halls, showrooms, open-plan offices and double-volume living rooms.
It is a poor fit for small bedrooms, where the cabinet eats floor space and the air stream lands at bed level.
Floor-standing, wall-mounted or cassette: which suits your space?
The three types differ in where the indoor unit sits and how much building work fitting it takes. A wall-mounted unit is the usual bedroom choice, a cassette hides in the ceiling and spreads air several ways, and a floor-standing unit needs no ceiling work but uses floor space.
| Floor-standing | Wall-mounted | Cassette | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it goes | Floor, by a wall or corner | High on a wall | Recessed in the ceiling |
| Air throw | Forward and up across the room | Down and out from the wall | Down and out, several directions |
| Installation work | Wall opening, pipes, floor-level drain | Bracket, wall opening, pipes | Ceiling opening, hangers, pipes above |
| Floor space used | A small footprint | None | None |
| Cleaning access | Front grille, standing height | Front panel, ladder | Ceiling panel, ladder |
| Typical setting | Shoplots, halls, showrooms | Bedrooms, condo living rooms | Offices, retail with false ceilings |
What should you plan before buying a floor-standing unit?
Plan the whole route before choosing a model: where the outdoor condenser will sit, how far the pipes must run, which way the condensate will drain, and whether the power supply can take the load. A qualified technician or electrician decides the electrical side; the owner simply needs to know these constraints early.
Shoplot and condo owners should check building-management rules on condenser positions. The model is the buyer's choice; this guide ranks no brand or model. The floor-standing aircon installation guide covers the site survey.
How do you look after a floor-standing unit?
A floor-standing unit needs the same care as any split system: clean filters, a clean evaporator coil and blower wheel, a clear drain pan and drain line, and an outdoor condenser with open airflow. Because its intake sits close to the floor, it also draws in dust kicked up by foot traffic.
Restaurant units also collect cooking grease. Aircon Hero's general recommendation is a service every 3 months for residential units and every 1 to 2 months for commercial units.
Floor-standing work has no published price: Aircon Hero quotes it after the technician sees the unit, and the customer approves the quote before work starts. The price list for wall-mounted and other units does not cover it.
Choose floor-standing for open rooms, then keep it serviced
For an open room with a high ceiling, or one crowded with lights and ducts, and no free wall, choose floor-standing; for a small bedroom, choose wall-mounted. Owners can book a floor-standing aircon service; see also commercial aircond services, residential aircond services and the Malay guide to floor-standing units. WhatsApp or call +60 18-355 5162.
