Quick answer: A portable aircon not cold is usually leaking its own heat back into the room through a kinked exhaust hose or a gap at the window panel, or is stopped by a full water tank or choked filter. Aircon Hero advises those free checks first; only a unit still blowing warm air needs a technician.

Why is my portable aircon not cold when the fan still blows?

A portable aircond keeps its cold coil and its hot coil in one box inside the room. The cold coil cools the air you feel; the hot coil must dump its heat outdoors through the exhaust hose. When that heat leaks back into the room, the fan keeps blowing but the room never cools.

A wall split keeps its hot side outside, so it fails differently. If yours is a wall-mounted unit, read why a wall-mounted aircon is not cold instead.

Is hot air from the exhaust hose leaking back in?

Hot air leaking back is a common reason a portable ac is not cooling the room. While the unit runs, feel along the exhaust hose and around the window panel. Warm air at the panel edges, or a hose that has sagged, kinked or slipped off its clip, means the heat the unit removed is coming straight back in.

  • Hose: keep it as short and straight as the window allows, with no sags or kinks.
  • Window panel: condo sliding windows leave a strip beside the panel. Seal it with the supplied foam and lock the sliding pane.

Why does my portable aircon struggle in the afternoon?

A single-hose portable unit pushes room air out through its exhaust hose, so replacement air is pulled in under doors and from other rooms. On a Klang Valley afternoon that air is hot and humid, and the unit ends up cooling air it has just drawn in, worst of all in a west-facing room.

Close the door, draw the curtains before the sun arrives and start the unit early. Also compare the room size in the manual with your room: a unit meant for a small bedroom never cools a large living room.

Which portable aircon check comes first?

Start with the checks that cost nothing and need no tools: mode, water tank, filter, hose and window panel. Only when all of them pass and the air is still warm has the fault moved inside the unit: a dirty coil or the sealed system. Switch the unit off and unplug it before opening any cover.

Check What you see Yourself or technician
Mode Fan or Dry icon on the display Yourself: set Cool
Water tank "FULL" or tank light; fan runs, no cold air Yourself: drain the tank
Filter Grey dust layer, weak airflow Yourself: rinse, dry, refit
Hose and panel Kinks, loose clip, warm air at the edges Yourself: straighten, reclip, seal
Coil Clean filter but weak or musty air Technician: coil cleaning
Refrigerant or compressor Strong airflow, every check passes, still warm Technician: diagnosis

When is a portable aircon not blowing cold air a technician job?

A portable aircon with strong airflow but no cold air, after the tank, filter, mode, hose and panel all check out, has a fault in the refrigerant circuit, compressor or electrics. Do not open the casing beyond the filter cover. Aircon Hero quotes a portable unit after the technician sees it, and the customer approves the quote before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Extending the hose past its supplied length is a common reason a portable aircon is not cold enough. A longer hose holds more hot air, radiates heat back into the room and makes the exhaust fan work harder. Move the unit closer to the window instead.

Not in Cool mode. Without the hose, the heat the unit removes from the room blows straight back into it, so the room gets warmer, not colder. Fan mode needs no hose because it only moves air around the room.

Yes. Humid Malaysian air carries a lot of moisture, and the unit condenses it out as it cools, so a tank that fills quickly on a wet day is normal. Water pooling under the unit, or a full tank with no warning light, needs a technician to check.

Most often the water tank has filled and switched the compressor off while the fan keeps running. Drain it and cooling usually returns. If the tank is empty and the air still turns warm after a while, the coil may be icing up from a blocked filter or low refrigerant.

Water left in the tank or drain tray and damp dust on the coil grow mould between uses. Empty the tank after each use and dry the unit before storing it; a smell that stays after a filter rinse means the coil needs a technician's clean.
