Why is a floor standing aircon not cold on a busy afternoon?
A floor-standing aircond is sized for a certain heat load, and a busy afternoon can exceed it. Customers, a running kitchen, an open door and western sun through a glass shopfront all add heat, and a shoplot turned restaurant may have outgrown its unit. If the space cools once the crowd leaves, the load is the cause, not a fault.
Is something blocking the front of the unit?
A floor-standing unit draws room air in through its intake grille and throws cooled air out from its tall front. Stock boxes, stacked chairs, a banner or a display rack in front can send the cold air straight back into the intake, so the unit cools itself instead of the room.
Could dirty filters or the wrong setting be the problem?
Yes, and both are free to check. In a shop or eatery, dust, lint and cooking grease clog the filters and coat the coil behind them, so less air crosses the coil. Fan or Dry mode, or a set point near room temperature, also gives weak cooling.
Switch the unit off and switch off at the isolator before opening any cover, then rinse, dry and refit the filters. A coil still grey behind clean filters needs a technician.
What should the outdoor unit and the pipes look like?
The outdoor condenser releases the heat taken out of the room. If a new signboard boxes it in, stock hems it in a back lane, or it breathes its own hot exhaust in a narrow air well, the space stays warm even when the indoor unit looks fine.
Ice on the insulated pipes points to starved airflow or low refrigerant, and water at the base of the indoor unit often follows as it melts.
Which check points to which fix?
Work down the table from the top. The first rows are free checks on airflow and settings; the last rows need gauges, electrical testing or parts. Stop at the first row that matches, fix it, then give the space time to cool before judging.
| Check | What you see | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Space load | Cold when empty, warm when busy | Shut doors, shade glass |
| Front of the unit | Stock or banners in front | Clear the air path |
| Controller | Fan or Dry mode, high set point | Set Cool, lower the set point |
| Filters | Grey, clogged mesh | Rinse, dry, refit |
| Outdoor unit | Boxed in, or fan still | Clear it; technician for the fan |
| Pipes and base | Ice, or water on the floor | Switch off to thaw; technician if it returns |
| All clear | Normal airflow, air not cold | Technician diagnosis |
When does a floor-standing aircond need a technician?
On a floor-standing split the fault can sit at either end, so the technician tests both: pressures at the outdoor unit's service valves, the outdoor fan motor and compressor, then the indoor blower motor and control board. That needs gauges, leak detection and electrical testing.
Aircon Hero quotes a floor-standing repair after the technician has seen the unit, and the customer approves the quote before work starts.
Clear it, clean it, then book the visit
Run the free checks before the next busy session. If the space still warms up once it fills, book floor-standing aircon service and repair with Aircon Hero's CIDB-registered technicians; shops and halls fall under commercial aircond maintenance, other faults under aircon repair. Read how a floor-standing aircond works, or, if yours is a wall-mounted unit, aircon not cold causes and fixes. Call +60 18-355 5162 or use the contact page.
